HAIR STYLIST
Seeking 1 full-time (32+ hours per week) and 1 to 2 part-time (15+ hours per week) stylists with 1-5 years of experience to join our dynamic team. We do not have an apprenticeship program, but we are willing to mentor newer stylists who are eager to hit the ground running! Priority will be given to candidates with between 1 to 5 years of experience so we can continue to offer a wide range of service prices to our clientele.
We are a commission-based employer (we do not offer booth rent contracts).
Job Requirements:
fully licensed Cosmetologist in the State of Kansas
keep workspace and tools clean and sanitized to Kansas Board of Cosmetology standards at all times
customer service skills
ability to work Saturdays and evenings. We have an overflow of clientele needing evening appointment times. Stylists are required to work at least two late shifts per week.
able to complete a medium-length haircut with long layers, shampoo, and blowdry style in 1 hour
able to complete (or willing to learn) a clipper cut with a basic fade, shampoo, and style in 1 hour. Priority will be given to those with experience in clipper cuts. We have an overflow of clients who want buzz/clipper styles!
able to complete (or willing to learn) chemical services including color, highlights, perms, vivids, etc.
basic cash-counting & transaction skills (stylists must be able to check out their own clients after services are complete)
basic math skills and general understanding of haircolor mixing ratios
Technology including computer and smart phone skills, credit card machine operation, using internet browser and apps, connecting to wifi and bluetooth, etc.
positive attitude and general willingness to be helpful and work as a positive part of a team
passion for inclusivity and providing a wide variety of services to a diverse clientele. We are a designated safe-space and gender-affirming salon. Candidates must be willing to uphold this standard while at work and explain its importance to those who ask.
other skills required: time management, self-regulation, creative problem solving, ability to communicate clearly and effectively, willing and able to give your best to each client even if what they ask for may not be your specialty
Please note: Our salon is located in a building built in 1855, which we rent. The building has been updated over the years, but the property owners have not been required to update accessibility codes to modern standards. There is a wheelchair-accessible ramp entrance in the back of the building, but no elevators. The building is three levels: main floor where services are performed and a restroom, a basement for storage, and an upstairs that holds the employee breakroom, extra linens, restroom, managers' office, and the color mixing/laundry space. These floors are accessible only by stairs that are slightly steeper than modern staircases. We have a designated half of a parking lot, but it fills up quickly so on busy days, employees may need to park in the lot to the east.
Compensation & Benefits
commission rates start at 45% of the service price and increases based on years of experience and years employed with us
service prices are determined after the interview based on your experience (for example, we have hired someone with 5 years of experience, and priced their haircut+blow dry style at $60, commission rate of 50% which results in $30 stylist income and $30 to the salon for overhead, costs, supplies, benefits, and wages for hourly employees.
all tips go directly to the stylist at the end of each business day in cash
health & retirement benefits include optional cost-share accident/injury/disability, dental, vision, and Simple Roth IRA retirement account contributions. We do not currently offer full medical benefits.
